Exploring the Wonders of Kenya: A Journey of a Lifetime
Introduction
As I reflect on my recent journey, I find myself eager to reconnect with my roots in journalism and embrace the opportunity to share my story. Kenya, a dream destination for many travelers, has long captivated my imagination. Having visited the African continent five times, I can confidently say that this trip exceeded every expectation and rekindled my passion for writing.
From the moment I arrived, I was enveloped by breathtaking landscapes, where vast savannahs of the Maasai Mara stretched endlessly, and the dramatic beauty of the Great Rift Valley unfolded before my eyes. Each new encounter with Kenya’s diverse wildlife, from the majestic elephants roaming freely to the stealthy lions basking in the sun, revealed the raw splendor of nature.
Yet, it was not just the natural wonders that moved me; the rich culture of Kenya also left an indelible mark on my heart. Engaging with local communities allowed me to witness their vibrant traditions and to appreciate the sense of unity that binds them. The colorful markets pulsed with life and creativity, offering a sensory feast that celebrated the artistic heritage and culinary delights of the region.
This remarkable experience has inspired me to put my thinking cap back on, inviting the stories and insights from my travels to flow onto the page. I am excited to share not just the beauty of Kenya, but also the profound connections that travel can foster, reminding us of the world’s extraordinary tapestry and our place within it.
Arrival in Nairobi
My goal for this trip was to reconnect with a group of international friends who have become like family over the years. The journey began in Nairobi, the bustling capital city of Kenya. As I stepped off the plane, a dark, misty wind greeted me, instantly immersing me in the city’s warm and friendly atmosphere. After settling into my cozy Airbnb, I eagerly set out to explore the vibrant streets, where the tantalizing scents of street food wafted through the air—spicy samosas sizzled alongside fresh mandazi, a sweet fried dough that beckoned with promises of delight.
My first adventure led me to Nairobi National Park, just a short drive from the heart of the city. It felt surreal to witness the wonders of nature so close to urban life. Giraffes gracefully munched on acacia leaves, their long necks reaching for the tender foliage, while zebras trotted playfully through the tall grass. The stunning backdrop of the city skyline created a striking juxtaposition of the untamed wild and modernity—an experience that made my heart swell with appreciation for the intricate beauty of Kenya.
A Heartwarming Encounter
While staying at my Airbnb I had a deeply meaningful encounter with the housekeeper, a single mother who brought her 4-year-old daughter, Joy, to work. Amidst the hustle, Joy’s infectious laughter pierced through, and her well-maintained hair framed her sparkling eyes. Despite the visible signs of her health struggles, she radiated joy that melted my heart.
One day, after a vigorous workout at the gym, I returned to my room to discover my cookies missing. Joy had indulged in them, and her mother rushed in at that moment, her face a blend of embarrassment and love, to apologize. I couldn’t help but smile. Joy’s innocent charm and the unspoken bond we shared made me realize that these little moments were the essence of my trip—pure, unfiltered joy in the simplest of exchanges.
Unexpected Friendships at the Gym
At the gym, I met two younger teenagers, who were immediately intrigued by my travel workout equipment and my AirPods. We connected quickly as I showed them how it worked, and to my delight, we ended up meeting daily. In those moments of shared laughter and camaraderie, it became clear that this was more than just a chance to teach; I was learning from them too. They were cousins, and as we exchanged stories, I could tell that their parents were likely middle class, yet their aspirations shone brightly—they both dreamed of becoming nurses.
Something about their enthusiasm stirred a soft spot in my heart, and I found myself getting emotional at times, especially watching them play basketball with abandon or join in on the workouts with smiles. It reminded me of the hope and resilience in youth, and it deepened my appreciation for the connections we formed in such a short time.
Cultural Encounters and Friendships
Beyond the heartwarming moments with Joy and new friends, my time in Nairobi was incredibly enriched by my friend Ahmed, who was the epitome of hospitality. With the 8-hour time difference and the resulting lack of sleep, Ahmed was determined to ensure I experienced the best of what Kenya had to offer. Together, we explored bustling markets filled with vibrant kitenge fabrics, enjoying fresh fruit and local delicacies, while exchanging stories that felt like bridges connecting our lives.
One surprising aspect of my visit was the public signage of Christian faith displayed proudly across the city. I was taken aback to see billboards, buses, and even restaurant signs proclaiming our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It struck me how the Muslim and Christian communities coexist peacefully, a testament to the cultural bonds that unite them despite their differences. Being in Kenya during Christmas, I was uncertain about what to expect. I probably saw only one Christmas tree throughout my visit, but the atmosphere was filled with genuine faith. It wasn’t about extravagant gifts; it was about sharing love with family, a refreshing contrast to the often commercialized Christmas spirit. In Kenya, love and faith reign supreme, reminding me of the true essence of the holiday season.
An Adventurous Journey to Tanzania
Everything is negotiable. We set off for the Tanzania border, located about 2½ hours south of Nairobi. The drive was quite an adventure, with bumpy roads, the sounds of honking horns, and donkeys meandering along the roadside while cows crossed our path. In all that time, I didn’t see a single stoplight. The mountains and countryside were breathtaking, showcasing the natural beauty of the landscape.
When we approached the border, I was warned to keep quiet, as my accent might lead to a lengthy inspection. Fortunately, my friend Ahmed, was well-prepared and managed to negotiate our way through, giving the border guard $5 to smooth the process. We had planned to spend the night, explore the area, and do some shopping, as it was said to be cheaper on the Tanzanian side.
Our first stop was a quaint little clothing store filled with cultural items, garments, and bracelets. I was eager to buy a few souvenirs, but haggling over each item became a necessity. After our shopping spree, we headed to a hotel aiming for a five-star experience. However, upon learning I was American, the hotel staff raised the rates, leading us to seek out a more affordable option. We eventually found a basic hotel for $20 a night. It wasn’t the most comfortable stay, but the mosquito net over the bed offered some peace of mind.
As evening approached, we decided to visit a restaurant. I was hesitant at first since it was tucked away in a dimly lit alley. We were greeted by a friendly young woman named Ester, who spoke limited English due to having to leave school early to support her siblings. I ordered chicken and plantains, which were delicious, although I couldn’t ignore the presence of two cats under my chair and the roaches creeping up the walls. I considered mentioning the cleanliness to Ester but ultimately decided it wasn’t worth my energy.
Midway through our meal, the lights went out, engulfing the restaurant in darkness until someone arrived with a generator. Such unexpected events are hard to plan for; sometimes, you simply have to adapt and go with the flow.
A Symphony of Sounds
One of the most profound experiences was learning to appreciate sound in a way I never had before. My Airbnb, located in a national park, became a sanctuary of sound—a symphony of nature that surrounded me. Each morning, I woke to the gentle crowing of roosters and the soft clucking of chickens, echoing memories of my first international homestay in a remote Cambodian village. It was a comforting reminder of simplicity, a call to awaken with the dawn.
As I sat outside, listening to the distant calls of birds, the rustle of grass, and even the unseen creatures that stirred, I truly realized the depth of tranquility that sound could bring. It became a grounding force in my travels, connecting me to the land and its stories.
Safari Adventures
Of course, no trip to Kenya would be complete without embarking on a safari. I visited the Maasai Mara during the Great Migration, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Witnessing thousands of wildebeests and zebras crossing the Mara River was a mesmerizing sight, as the echo of their hooves rang through the air. Each day spent under the vast Kenyan sky felt like a breathtaking tableau, where nature danced in its rawest form. I spent my days traversing the rugged terrain in search of the “Big Five”—lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffaloes—and I was fortunate enough to spot them all. Each safari excursion brought new adventures and encounters that left me in awe of nature’s grandeur.
Stunning Landscapes
Kenya’s landscapes are as diverse as its wildlife. After the Maasai Mara, I traveled to Lake Naivasha, a serene freshwater lake bordered by lush greenery, where the air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers. I took a boat ride to see hippos lounging lazily on the banks and a variety of bird species, including flamingos that painted the shoreline in vibrant pink hues. The peacefulness of Lake Naivasha offered a perfect contrast to the excitement of the safari, as I soaked in the beauty that surrounded me.
Next, my journey took me to the breathtaking Rift Valley, where I stood in awe overlooking vast grasslands and dramatic escarpments bathed in golden sunlight. I found myself marveling at the incredible vistas, capturing photographs that could never quite replicate the richness of my experience.
It’s an Emergency
I found myself making an unexpected trip to the emergency room, and let me tell you, it wasn’t part of the itinerary I had in mind. During the flight, I had been so wrapped up in my own thoughts that I barely moved, resulting in a tingling sensation in my left leg that I brushed off at first. But as the days passed, that tingling morphed into alarming numbness in my arm and face. It hit me: I needed help—either in London or back home in the States. Not wanting to tempt fate with any potentially life-threatening complications, I opted for Nairobi West Hospital, renowned for its impressive healthcare facilities. Ahmed, is a great driver, however it can be scary driving in Nairobi in general. As we’re driving, I’m sweating and nervous thinking that I may be at the early stages of a stroke. It was the same public display of Christian signs and billboards while on the highway that helped me get to the hospital. I saw one sign on the back of mudflap on a bus that said half faith. At that moment, it gave me a sense of peace and security that the Lord was with me.
As I walked in, I braced myself for the inevitable chaos of a waiting room packed with patients, and knew that having cash on hand would be my trump card. When I reached the check-in counter and the staff asked for my insurance card, I raised an eyebrow and declared I preferred to pay cash. A wise choice, I’d soon realize, as the process moved at a surprisingly fast pace. To see the doctor cost me $9.00—what a steal! After sharing my symptoms, the physician, Dr. Leah recommended a CT scan. For another $35.00, I was on my way to the radiologist.
But here’s where it got interesting: after the scan, I was told the radiologist had left for the day and my results wouldn’t be ready until tomorrow. Oh, no way was I accepting that. With the nurses bustling around, trying to soothe my frustration, I spotted the radiologist leaving without his white coat. Recognition hit me—it was the same doctor I’d seen earlier. Without missing a beat, I intercepted him and insisted that after paying for my CT scan, I expected instant results. To my surprise, he actually complied and reviewed them right then and there. Normal results—phew! But the tingling and numbness were still nagging at me. I asked to see Dr. Leah in the emergency room for further assistance.
I requested a blood sugar test and some medication to help bridge the gap until I could return to the U.S. Thankfully, my blood results came back normal, and the medication worked wonders. Dr. Leah was a real gem—kind, professional, and surprisingly in tune with my vibe. As we chatted, she asked how long I’d be in town and playfully tossed in a cheeky question about whether I’d take her on a date. Even though I was feeling under the weather, I couldn’t help but flirt back, keeping the conversation light and playful. After all, who doesn’t enjoy a little intrigue, even in a hospital setting?
However, not wanting to jeopardize my health, I made the decision to return to the States earlier than planned. While Dr. Leah and I had intended to go on a date, we would have to postpone for now. I FaceTimed her just before heading to the airport, and she even tried to meet me there. Unfortunately, I was running extremely late due to long customs lines. As I stood in line, frustration boiled over, and I decided to switch my flight for the next day.
At the check-in gate, I explained my situation to a gentleman who informed me that I still had time but that my flight had already begun boarding. As they called my name over the loudspeaker for final boarding, he took my hand and expedited me through customs. I found myself yelling at him to call the gate agent and let them know we were on our way, all while battling the numbness and pain that had prompted my early return.
Despite the chaos and the fact that we were well past boarding time, I managed to board the flight—thanks to the incredible British Airways staff. As I entered the plane, sweating and relieved, a flight attendant took my bags and guided me to my seat. Over the PA, the captain announced, “Let’s welcome our final passenger, Mr. Jackson!” The other passengers erupted into applause, transforming a tough situation into a surprisingly joyful ending.
Farewell
As my trip drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the beauty of Kenya and the warmth of its people. Each experience, whether it was navigating the lively streets of Nairobi or marveling at the stunning wildlife in the Maasai Mara, enveloped me in a profound sense of awe and gratitude. The vibrant hustle and bustle of the city, alive with the laughter of children and the sounds of lively conversations, reminded me to savor the simple joys of life.
In Nairobi, I delighted in the small pleasures, like sipping rich coffee at a local café while watching the world go by, or enjoying a plate of freshly prepared ugali—a staple that grounded my connection to the culture. The vibrant markets, filled with colorful crafts and the enticing aromas of spices, offered a treasure trove of sensory experiences that deepened my appreciation for the creativity and resourcefulness of the local artisans.
Venturing into the Maasai Mara was nothing short of magical. Watching the sun rise over the plains, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, was a moment of sheer tranquility that reminded me to embrace the beauty of nature. I reveled in the simplicity of seeing a family of elephants grazing peacefully, feeling a profound connection to the earth and its inhabitants. Each day in the Mara was a reminder that life unfolds in moments—whether it was a shared laugh with a friendly guide or the breathtaking sight of a lioness and her cubs playing under the watchful gaze of the African sun. Kenya has so much to offer, and I departed with a deep appreciation for its natural wonders and cultural richness. This journey not only reignited my passion for storytelling but also enriched my understanding of the importance of enjoying life’s simple moments. As I boarded the plane home, I carried with me a heart full of memories, and the realization that true beauty often lies in the everyday experiences we sometimes overlook.
